Possible strike by Liverpool dockworkers raises concerns over port disruptions

July 20, 2022

Hundreds of dockworkers are going to vote on strike action later this month, after negotiations over pay hike failed between employees and the MDHC Container Services.

The strike, which could possibly take place next month, has raised concerns about possible disruptions to vessel movements and cargo handling in the port.

“Strike action will inevitably severely affect shipping and road transport as well as creating shortages in supply chains but this dispute is entirely of Peel Ports own making. Unite has held extensive negotiations with the company but it has refused to address members' concerns,” the union’s regional officer Steven Gerrard said.

The workers are not happy with the 7% pay hike offered by the company, saying the offer is much below the current inflation rate.

The Unite union, which represents more than 500 dockworkers in the company, said the ballot for strike action will open on 25 July and close on 15 August.
