The container ship MSC Leandra will be bunkered with the emulsion fuel MAC2 facility in Antwerp in the second half of the year.

Cargill will supply feedstocks and manage bunkering operations, while MAC2 will provide logistical support, including jetty space, utilities and permits. Quadrise will contribute its technology and personnel for fuel production.

The initial phase will focus on tests using low sulphur emulsion fuels over two months, and be followed by 6-8 months of additional testing.

Quadrise mixes heavy residual fuel oils with small amounts of chemicals and water to produce a synthetic heavy fuel oil that contains “approximately 30% water and less than 1% chemicals.”

There is also a bio version of this fuel, which replaces part of the fossil component with renewable glycerine.

The companies intend to enter into a long-term fuel supply agreement for deliveries in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
