Renault taps into UECC’s low-emission shipment service for CO2 savings

September 17, 2025

French carmaker Renault Group will purchase emission reductions from Norwegian shipping line United European Car Carriers (UECC) through the use of liquefied biomethane (LBM) on its fleet.

UECC offers a low-emission shipment service that allows customers to purchase emission savings linked to its LBM- and biofuel-powered dual-fuel vessels.

Last year, UECC explained to ENGINE that the scheme uses a mass-balance system. It allows its clients to receive emission reductions even if their actual cargo is carried on conventionally-fuelled vessels.

For Renault, UECC will allocate savings from using LBM across its dual-fuel fleet, with fuel supplied by Netherlands-based Titan Clean Fuels.

“Pilot shipments of Renault vehicles started on 1 July from Zeebrugge, Belgium to Esbjerg, Denmark,” UECC said. These are projected to cut around 1,000 mt/year of CO2, which will be credited to Renault.

Renault is the fifth automaker to join UECC’s service, which also includes JLR, Toyota Motor Europe, Ford of Europe and one unnamed European manufacturer. The French carmaker has pledged to cut Scope 3 supply chain emissions by 27% by 2030, achieve net-zero across its EU supply chain by 2040 and reach full global neutrality by 2050.
