Rotoboost’s Carbon Capture System gets Lloyd’s Register nod

Norwegian hydrogen production company Rotoboost’s pre-combustion Carbon Capture System (CCS) has been approved by classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR).

The system named Rotobox converts part of the liquified natural gas (LNG) fuel supply into hydrogen and solid carbon (graphite) over a liquid catalyst using heat - the process is also known as thermocatalytic decomposition.

The resulting hydrogen can then be used as a drop-in fuel with LNG to reduce methane slip in combustion engines or directly in hydrogen fuel cells, according to Rotoboost.

Rotoboost claims that the system can reduce carbon emissions by up to 100% depending on the heating method used.

Lower space and electrical power requirements make this system well-suited for LNG carriers and other LNG-fuelled vessels, the company says.

“Solving the methane emissions perception in the industry, through technology and evidence enables LNG to become a future fuel that is readily available today, subject to affordability – which ranks higher than any other alleged lower emissions fuel available today,” LR chief commercial officer Andy McKeran says.
