Rotterdam commissions study on Australian ammonia export terminal
The Port of Rotterdam has commissioned ammonia engineering company Proton Venture to conduct a feasibility study to scope out and conceptualise an ammonia export terminal in Western Australia.

The study will look into the technical feasibility and costs of storing and loading ammonia from a port terminal facility in Australia’s Oakajee.
Rotterdam aims to import about 3 million mt/year of ammonia by 2030. Last year, the port announced a hydrogen import target of 4.6 million mt/year by 2030. The export terminal in Oakajee will help Rotterdam port accelerate its import target, as ammonia can be converted back to hydrogen after it is shipped and delivered in Rotterdam.
Proton Ventures have partnered with two marine infrastructure developers, Intecsea and Bluewater, to design storage tanks in combination with a mooring.
In January, Australia and the Netherlands signed a renewable hydrogen agreement to set up a hydrogen supply chain from Australia to Rotterdam.
