A trial run will be undertaken later this year, wherein two Cargow vessels will be converted to operate on shore-based power systems.

The port authority will set up the pilot project at the C. Steinweg - Handelsveem B.V.Beatrix terminal in nearby Eemhaven. The location has been selected to avoid any obstacles to other terminal operations.

Steinweg will free the space required at the terminal for the pilot to proceed smoothly and the working area will be fenced to meet safety requirement, the Port of Rotterdam says.

Rotterdam is coordinating the project with other regional ports such as Antwerp, Bremen, Hamburg and Haropa. Collective measures will lead to standardisation, scale up development and lower cost, it says.
