The news has put some upward pressure on Brent’s price as the Russian missile struck the Turkey-flagged LPG tanker MT Orinda while it was offloading cargo at the Danube River port of Izmail, according to media reports.
The attack highlights ongoing tensions over energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine, raising the risk of regional spillover and further supporting Brent crude.
The port of Izmail is located directly across NATO-member Romania’s border. The country is on high alert, leading to the evacuation of the nearby village of Plauru along the Ukrainian border, the BBC reported.
“Turkish seafarers cannot be left alone in the midst of war,” Turkish member of parliament Ulas Karasu said on social media platform X, as he shared a video of the vessel on fire from the drone debris.
In September, Russia breached the Polish airspace. Poland intercepted the Russian drones, marking the first instance of a NATO member engaging directly in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which is now in its third year.
