The vessel will sail between Piraeus and the Greek islands of Aegina and Agistri, provided the port has the required recharging facility by then, the companies said in a joint statement.
Its propulsion will be fully electric and it will have capacity to carry 800 passengers.
The move is in line with the Saronic Ferries’ aim to “operate a purely emissions-free fleet by 2040 to all destinations,” it says.
Last month, the company entered an agreement with ship classification society DNV develop the electric ferry. DNV has created rules for classification of ships with battery propulsion and been involvedd in a range of other projects.
