A rotor sail is a modernized version of a Flettner rotor that uses the Magnus effect to generate lift by creating air pressure, causing it to spin. This technology allows ships to reduce engine power when wind conditions are favourable, lowering fuel consumption while maintaining speed.
Under the agreement, Sea-Cargo will retrofit two of its RoRo vessels, MV Trans Hav and MV Trans Sol (formerly MV Misida and MV Misana), with three 24-meter-high rotor sails each. These vessels primarily operate between Norway and mainland Europe.
Sea-Cargo’s SC Connector was the first vessel to be equipped with Norsepower’s rotor sails in 2021. Since installation, the vessel has achieved average fuel savings of 20–25%, Norsepower claimed.
However, the company has not disclosed further details about the new order, including the delivery date.
