Sirius Shipping considers e-methanol for upcoming tankers
The methanol-ready tankers on order will be powered by e-methanol to achieve zero-carbon emissions, Sweden-based Sirius Shipping says.

Tanker operator Sirius Shipping has ordered two 15,000-dwt methanol-ready chemical tankers from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard for delivery starting in 2026. Sirius Shipping also has an option to order two more of these vessels in the future.
The vessels will be equipped with methanol-ready dual-fuel engines, so they can be converted to methanol propulsion in the future. In the meantime, methanol fuel tanks will be installed onboard the vessels, said Sirius Shipping.
“With methanol as fuel onboard, the vessel is able to comply beyond the European Green Deal package: FIT FOR 55 and FuelEU Maritime initiative. With future supply of e-methanol the vessel is able to reach zero Co2 and almost non-existent NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions,” Sirius Shipping added.
Fit for 55 package is part of EU’s broader Green Deal climate action plan. Fit for 55 includes two regulations targeting shipping emissions: FuelEU Maritime and EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
FuelEU Maritime will become law this autumn and be implemented from January 2025. According to the current text of FuelEU Maritime mandate, the European maritime sector will have to cut the greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of the energy used onboard ships by 2% by 2025, 14.5% by 2035, 31% by 2040, and 80% by 2050, compared to 2020 levels.
