South Sudan threatens to quit OPEC+ if output increase plan blocked

September 14, 2022

South Sudan has threatened to leave OPEC if the group interferes with its ambitious plan to increase crude oil production to 230,000 b/d by 2024.

The country has faced issues with OPEC while working on its plan to increase crude oil production, South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar told an industry conference yesterday.

Machar added that the nation aims to “become an oil hub in the east African region and foster economic development".

According to Argus Media estimates, South Sudan's actual crude oil output in August was 160,000 b/d, higher than the 130,000 b/d cap set by OPEC+.

South Sudan was one of the 10 non-OPEC nations that joined the oil producers' group to form OPEC+ in late 2016.
