Houston-based integrated energy company Stabilis Solutions bunkered Pasha Hawaii’s newest container ship MV George III with LNG for the first time in Long Beach, California.

Stabilis worked with supplier West Coast Clean Fuels to deliver the LNG stem.

The MV George III is a container ship operating between Long Beach, Honolulu and Oakland.

Pasha Hawaii is putting three LNG-powered vessels into operation, with the MV George III being the first. It will be followed by the Janet Marie later this year and a third vessel by the middle of next year.

Classification society DNV’s data shows that the number of LNG-powered vessels in operation or on order has gone up by 141 since last year, to 387 this year.

The next few years will see this number more than double. A total of 833 LNG-powered vessels are registered as in operation or on order towards 2028.

LNG looks to be the alternative fuel of choice for a lot of container ship owners. 215 of the 833 LNG-powered vessels registered in DNV's database are container ships - more than twice as many as of the second (104 car carriers) and third (89 crude oil tankers) biggest vessel types.
