STAX to capture exhaust emissions from tankers in port of Los Angeles

Equilon Enterprises, doing business as Shell Oil Products US, has inked a deal with emission reduction technology firm STAX Engineering to capture and filter exhaust emissions from its tanker vessels at Shell’s Mormon Island Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles.

STAX’s technology captures exhaust gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from a vessel’s funnel by connecting it to a barge, a small flat-bottomed ship, or a land-based exhaust-gas treatment system via steel pipes and hoses. Thus, preventing the vessel from venting out the exhaust gases into the air.

The technology makes capturing exhaust gases possible without installing any additional equipment on the vessel, STAX claims.

Under the agreement, STAX will begin deploying its technology in 2025, aligning with the new emissions regulations set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for tankers. These expanded CARB regulations mandate car carriers and tankers at California ports to reduce emissions while docked, starting in 2025.

STAX has secured exclusive service agreements at major California ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Hueneme, Benicia, Richmond and Oakland.

In March, Japanese shipping company NYK Line inked a deal with STAX to capture exhaust gases from its ships calling at ports in California, US.
