The RoRo vessel Saint-Malo can run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels.
It features a 12 MWh (megawatt hour) battery system, allowing it to operate solely on batteries when navigating in and out of port, and even handle docking and departure without relying on its main engine. The vessel's battery system is scalable, which means it could potentially run entirely on battery power in the future, according to Stena RoRo. Besides, the vessel is equipped with a shore power connection.
Saint-Malo is chartered to the French shipping company Brittany Ferries for a 10-year term, with an option to purchase after four years. Starting in February next year, it will operate on the Portsmouth-Saint-Malo route.
This vessel is the fourth of five dual-fuel ships joining Brittany Ferries’ fleet: the first, Galicia, was delivered in September 2020; the second, Salamanca, in November 2021; and the third, Santona, in December 2022. Saint-Malo, the fourth vessel, was delivered earlier this month, and the fifth and final vessel is scheduled for delivery in early January 2025.
