The Port of Stockholm has launched its first onshore power supply (OPS) system for cruise ships, making it Sweden's first facility of this kind, according to the port authority.

The system was officially launched yesterday, with TUI Cruises’ cruise ship, Mein Schiff 7, being the first vessel to connect.

The OPS allows ships to shut down their auxiliary engines while docked, significantly reducing air and noise pollution around the port area.

Around 45% of cruise ships docking at the Port of Stockholm can now use shore power. The electricity supplied is fully renewable, generated from wind and hydropower, the port authority adds.

Alongside other Baltic Sea ports - Copenhagen/Malmö, Aarhus, and Helsinki - received EU funding for this initiative.

In May, the AIDAdiva, a cruise ship owned by the German cruise line AIDA Cruises, tested an onshore power supply in Stockholm.
