Tallink’s vessel joins Gasum’s FuelEU pool
Estonian shipping company Tallink will operate one of its vessels on liquefied biomethane (LBM) to generate overcompliance for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling arrangement.

Finnish state-owned energy firm Gasum operates a FuelEU pooling arrangement in the Baltic region, using liquefied biomethane (LBM) as its primary compliance fuel.
Tallink’s vessel MyStar makes daily crossings between the port of Helsinki in Finland and the port of Tallinn in Estonia. Gasum will supply LBM from its Pori terminal to the Finnish LNG supplier Elenger, which will then bunker the vessel.
The compliance surplus generated from using LBM on this route will then be sold to buyers, such as Swedish pulp and paper producer Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) and ferry operator Stena Line, to offset FuelEU shortfalls on their EU-trading vessels and avoid penalties.
“Because of this agreement with Elenger and Tallink, we are able to strengthen our FuelEU Maritime pool with yet another vessel, expanding our ability to support our customers in need of compliance,” Jacob Granqvist, vice president at Gasum said.
Other vessels in the pool include Gasum’s two bunkering vessels, Coralius and Kairos, one ferry operated by Wasaline, two ferries operated by Viking Line and two LNG carriers from Anthony Veder.
Swedish shipping company Wallenius Sol has also joined the pool, though it has not specified how many vessels it has added.
Gasum supplies LBM to all ships in the pool. The pooling compliance surplus was priced at €230/mtCO2e ($267/mtCO2e) on 2 December, with a minimum purchase requirement of 500 mt.
“As the end of the year draws closer, we are doing our best to secure as much compliance as possible,” Granqvist added.
Meanwhile, Tallink plans to “fully replace” the use of LNG on its two ferries, MyStar and Megastar, with LBM over the next year, chief executive Paavo Nõgene said.
