TasPorts and H2U Group plan green hydrogen and ammonia hub at Bell Bay
State-owned port operator TasPorts has signed an agreement with green hydrogen developer H2U Group to evaluate the feasibility of developing a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production and export facility at the Bell Bay port industrial precinct in northern Tasmania.

Under this partnership, the two parties will examine the project’s technical, environmental and social feasibility, including requirements for port infrastructure, energy and water supply, and export logistics.
The proposed facility will have an initial production capacity of up to 500,000 mt/year of green ammonia, with room for expansion. The project aims to strengthen Tasmania’s renewable energy sector and support the growing hydrogen industry.
“Our investigations will focus on assessing the implementation of a large-scale production facility from green hydrogen and derivative commodities – including green ammonia and associated bunkering infrastructure – for export and domestic use,” TasPorts chief executive Anthony Donald said.
The study is expected to be completed by the end of the financial year (July-June), according to TasPorts.
The Bell Bay industrial precinct has already been designated by both the Tasmanian and Australian governments as a strategic site for renewable energy development.
