As ENGINE reported last month, citing European Parliament member Peter Liese, a "preliminary" tripartite agreement had been reached between European institutions to include shipping in the EU ETS.
The scope of the regulations in the provisional deal remains the same as in the preliminary tripartite agreement.
The provisional agreement will now be subject to approval by the Council and the European Parliament. The pieces of legislation will be adopted by the Parliament and the Council before proceeding with the formal steps of adoption.
Upon approval by the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Council, the directive will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and will become effective 20 days later.
