Besides local consumption, the project will also explore the possibility of setting up an offshore terminal to facilitate the export of hydrogen to northwest Europe from the facility in Western Australia.

The Port of Rotterdam, Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) along with Western Australia’s Mid-West Port Authority are conducting a joint study to explore the hydrogen export supply chain for the project.

The broad coalition between the three countries is working to increase hydrogen imports from Australia through Rotterdam.

The hydrogen production facility in SIA has the potential to become one of the world’s largest hydrogen-producing areas as it has abundant solar and wind energy resources, the Port of Rotterdam Authority says.

The partnership between the three countries will enable various industries including transport to use green hydrogen and reduce emissions, the Port Authority adds.

Around 20 companies from the three countries have so far expressed interest in participating in the project, it says.
