Ammonia was this week's headline fuel, whether it was stories about engines, vessels or production developments. It is gaining traction as the marine industry grows ever more confident about its use as a future fuel, and its outlook continues to brighten.

ENGINE's alternative fuels article series continued with a look at how the marine industry is preparing to use ammonia as a bunker fuel. Mikael Wideskog, director of sustainable fuels and decarbonisation at Wärtsilä Marine Power, discussed how the engine manufacturer is tackling some of the challenges involved in developing ammonia engines.

Japanese shipping company K Line announced plans to launch ammonia-fuelled vessels by 2028 and develop alternative fuel supply networks. Its executive officer in charge of GHG reduction strategy, Toyohisa Nakano, said ammonia would be crucial to achieving net-zero emissions.

Singapore is gearing up to start ammonia bunkering by 2027. It invited bids from companies to build, own and operate ammonia bunkering and power generation infrastructure on Jurong Island.

Oman’s state-owned oil company OQ signed a contract to produce and supply ammonia and methanol in Oman with Danish shipping major A.P. Moller – Maersk, Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation and Omani logistics company Asyad Group.

And South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Group shared its goal of developing fuel supply logistics to assist with global ammonia production efforts. The company is building an ammonia storage and regasification vessel to transport and store liquid ammonia from the production unit, which will be converted to gaseous ammonia onboard before moving further down the supply chain.
