The bunker operation initiated a term supply agreement between the two companies.

Under the agreement, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, the bunkering business unit of the French oil company TotalEnergies, will supply Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet with the B24 biofuel blend – a mixture of 76% VLSFO and 24% waste-based Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME) fuel.

Hapag-Lloyd's 15,000 TEU container vessel, Afif, took a ship-to-ship transfer of 2,000 mt of biofuel on 20 January 2023.

TotalEnergies became the first customer of fuel storage provider Jurong Port Universal Terminal Pte Ltd (JPUT) after it took on 100% UCOME bio-component into their storage tanks.

TotalEnergies said its assessments show that the B24 biofuel blend will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% compared to conventional marine fuels.

“This is another early step for Hapag-Lloyd on our decarbonization journey. In combination with other green fuels, biofuel will play an important role towards a carbon-free environment by 2045,” says Jan Christensen senior director global fuel purchasing at Hapag-Lloyd.
