Trelleborg port to build wind turbines for shore power

December 13, 2023

The Swedish port of Trelleborg has contracted German wind turbine maker ENERCON to build two wind turbines to supply green power for the port’s energy needs including shore power.

Under the deal, ENERCON will construct two 120-meter-tall wind turbines on the 500-meter-long quay. The turbines are expected to produce 15 million kilowatt-hour (kWh) of power each year.

The work is expected to commence in the spring of 2024, while the wind turbines are scheduled to be delivered in August/September 2024.

The move is in sync with the Port of Trelleborg’s – Scandinavia’s largest RoRo traffic port– ambition to attain net zero emissions by 2040. Starting from 2030, all vessels docking at the port will be required to connect to shore power, which will result in higher energy consumption.

“The new wind turbines, together with the Port of Trelleborg’s own solar park of 2,200 square meters, will produce more green energy than we consume,” Port of Trelleborg’s landlord Ulf Sonesson says.

The port authorities believe that the key to reducing its emissions “is to offer the right conditions for our customers to reduce their emissions and secure access to climate-friendly fuels such as, for example, green hydrogen and charging infrastructure with green electricity.”

The project is co-funded by the EU under its Green FIT 2025 program.
