Spanish oil storage operator Exolum, Canadian methanol producer Methanex and Danish renewable energy group Ørsted have introduced biomethanol bunkering at the Port of Immingham in the UK.

The project represents “the United Kingdom’s (U.K.) first commercially ready bio-methanol storage and supply service for shipping,” according to Exolum.

Under the agreement, Exolum will provide storage and fuelling infrastructure at its Immingham facility, while Methanex will supply the biomethanol. Ørsted will become the first user of the service, fuelling its North Sea offshore wind farm maintenance vessels.

“This initiative marks a significant milestone for the Port of Immingham and the wider maritime sector. By enabling biomethanol bunkering, we are taking practical steps toward decarbonising one of the hardest-to-abate industries,” said Steven Clapperton, Head of Marine (Humber) at Associated British Ports, which owns the Port of Immingham.

The Port of Immingham is situated on the south bank of the Humber Estuary in North-East Lincolnshire, eastern England, the UK.
