Tugboats, which are typically used to tow or push larger vessels in harbours, rivers and canals, have a limited direct impact on global greenhouse gas emissions. However, this vessel is expected to generate valuable technical and operational insights that could pave the way for the development of larger hydrogen-powered ships in the future.

The tugboat is powered by twin 12-cylinder hydrogen dual-fuel engines and carries around 250 kg of hydrogen in high-pressure storage tanks. It also features a hydrogen supply system provided by JPNH2YDRO, a joint venture between Tsuneishi Group and Belgian shipping company CMB.Tech.

The vessel was developed and constructed as part of The Nippon Foundation’s Zero Emission Ships Project.

This delivery represents “Japan’s first hydrogen dual-fuelled tugboat,” Tsuneishi Shipbuilding’s president, Okumura Sachio, stated.
