Methanol-ready means that the vessel will not be capable of running on methanol upon delivery, but it will have the option to be retrofitted for methanol propulsion in the future. This implies it will likely run on fossil-marine fuels upon delivery.
The 7,900-dwt cruise ship, Mein Schiff 7, will “run on methanol in the future, with the prospect of green methanol,” a spokesperson from TUI Cruises told ENGINE.
Mein Schiff 7 is structurally identical to its sister ships Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2, which were delivered by Meyer Turku in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Mein Schiff 7 will embark on its maiden cruise voyage through the Danish South Seas from the German port of Kiel in June.
In January, TUI Cruises entered an agreement with Hamburg-based energy company Mabanaft for supply of green methanol.
“The agreement aims to cover the future demand of green methanol for our ship in German ports. In the next stage, the supply might be extended to other ports in Europe,” the spokesperson added.
