UK-based renewable energy firm Yamna plans to set up a green ammonia plant near the Port of Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India.

The Port of Krishnapatnam is a deep-water cargo port on the east coast of India.

Green ammonia is produced by combining green hydrogen and nitrogen using renewable electricity.

Yamna’s facility will integrate green hydrogen production on-site and tap into the local renewable power grid to produce up to 1 million mt/year of green ammonia.

Yamna has not yet confirmed whether the product will be used for marine bunkering. But India has been steadily gaining attention as a potential production base for green ammonia exports, some of which may support future bunkering demand.

Indian company AM Green is developing a 1 million mt/year green ammonia plant at Kakinada Port in Andhra Pradesh, about 500 km north of Krishnapatnam. Norway’s Yara Clean Ammonia has agreed to offtake the plant’s entire output, with plans to supply the shipping industry and other sectors.

AM Green eventually aims to scale up production to 5 million mt/year by 2030. It has collaborated with the Port of Rotterdam to export green ammonia to Europe, with part of that future volume potentially earmarked for marine bunkering.

Separately, Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and five other companies are also exploring green ammonia investments in India through a collaboration with local renewable energy developer ACME Group.

A.P. Moller-Maersk, too, recently flagged the South Asian nation as a strategic location for alternative fuels production and estimated up to $5 billion in potential investments to support port and infrastructure development.
