UPDATE - Kawasaki ship engine to run on 95% hydrogen

December 5, 2022

“The hydrogen dual-fuel engine can be operated by 95% hydrogen and 5% low sulphur oil. A 5% low-sulphur oil means pilot fuel as ignition,” a Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) spokesperson has told Engine.

KHI plans to use hydrogen boil-off gas that "evaporates naturally from the ship's liquefied hydrogen cargo tanks” as the main fuel on a hydrogen carrier it is developing.

It says “the dual fuel generator engine is capable of switching between hydrogen and low-sulphur fuel oil flexibly.”

A KHI spokesperson declined to reveal any updates regarding the company's plans to eventually build and launch 100% hydrogen-fuelled marine engines.

Engine reported last week that adual-fuel generator engine developed by KHI, which switches between hydrogen and VLSFO, has been approved in principle by shipping classification society ClassNK.
