US-based startup wants to build green ammonia production vessel
Electrolyser manufacturer Ohmium International plans to build a floating ammonia production plant to supply shipping.

Dutch maritime designer Switch2 Offshore will design the floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel. Ohmium International will supply the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser with a 300-megawatt capacity.
The unit is expected to produce 55,000 mt/year of green hydrogen and 300,000 mt/year of green ammonia. The technology will use solar and wind energy for power and treated seawater for electrolysis to produce green hydrogen.
“The hydrogen will be fed into an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit, and the resulting product will eventually be offloaded onto an ammonia carrier for transport to offtakers,” Ohmium explains.
The vessel is anticipated to receive DNV’s approval for the design. It will be located off the southern coast of Europe and green ammonia production is expected to start in 2029.
Ohmium believes that the market for green ammonia as a bunker fuel is “poised to grow exponentially in the coming decades, especially as a source of clean fuel for the global shipping industry.”
