Funds will be used primarily to develop infrastructure, such as shore power installations and zero-emission alternative fuels or electric propulsion for ferries and tugboats, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The EPA is the federal environmental regulator.
Additionally, funds will cover "zero-emission port equipment including electric or fuel cell dray trucks, harbor craft, locomotives, cargo handling equipment" and the charging and fuelling infrastructure that supports them.
The EPA says the Clean Ports Program "will transform port infrastructure while boosting investments for zero-emission port equipment and technology that reduces climate and air pollutants and improves air quality at ports and surrounding communities.”
Suppliers have been asked to submit feedback by 5 June. These include manufacturers, fleets, ports, zero-emission technology providers and other industry stakeholders.
