Each ship will have a sail system, featuring multiple free-standing rotating masts with curved yards. This system will enable efficient sail handling and best wind capture, Veer.Voyage claims.
Just by using the sails, the ships can reach speeds of up to 18 knots (33 km/h) without any fuel consumed, the shipping company's chief executive Danielle Doggett earlier told ENGINE.
The two vessels will be constructed based on the company's design, which received an approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping in October 2022. The vessels will have hydrogen fuel cells for auxiliary power.
Hamburg-based Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement will provide technical management services for both ships. Veer.Voyage is collaborating with Hong Kong-based shipbroker FutureShips and is in talks with several unnamed charterers to launch these ships in 2027.
Amsterdam-based investment firm PROW Capital will finance the construction of the vessels.
