Norwegian ship designing firm Vard Design will lead the project together with its sister companies Seaonics and Vard Electro.
The project will be carried out over three years and will be supported by a consortium of partners including Norwegian shipping firms Rem Offshore and Solstad Offshore, energy company Equinor, battery technology provider Corvus Energy and industry body Maritime CleanTech.
"Developing the offshore wind industry in Norway will drive significant new maritime activity, including a new fleet and maritime infrastructure,” Maritime CleanTech’s head of innovation Øystein Huglen says.
The first vessel to try recharging from an offshore wind farm will be the construction service operation vessel REM Power, which is currently being built.
The project was announced in December last year and was granted NOK 38 million ($3.7 million) in funding from the Norwegian government.
