Conversion of the two tanks, having 55,000 cbm capacity each, will help to address the growing need for renewable energy in the region, Vopak says.

Other infrastructure such as berths and pipelines are available on site, along with additional space to set up installations for converting ammonia to green hydrogen, it says.

The terminal will later be connected to the Northwest European hydrogen network, which can be used to supply the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

Vlissingen terminal in the Scheldt-Delta region offers an ideal site for storing green ammonia as it the largest hydrogen cluster in the Benelux countries currently.

Vopak claims that the project will support the Dutch climate goals as the region accounts for more than a fifth of industrial carbon dioxide emissions. It will take final decision on investment in the project on the basis of market interest.

Vopak believes that ammonia as a hydrogen carrier will play a crucial role in decarbonisation efforts. Besides production of green hydrogen in the Netherlands, there is need for large-scale imports, it says.

The company is currently with Gasunie and HES International (HES) to develop an import terminal for green ammonia as a hydrogen carrier in the Port of Rotterdam.
