Wagenborg says the shipment was requested by one of its customers, and the voyage demonstrated the ease of using biofuels to reduce emissions.
The co-processed marine fuel used by Wagenborg is produced from feedstocks such as vegetable oils, used cooking oil or animal fats. It can reduce GHG emissions by up to 80% over the lifecycle assessment compared to conventional fuels, the company said.
Wagenborg says all of its multipurpose vessels (MPP) can easily run on co-processed marine fuel with little to no onboard modification required.
The company aims to achieve a 40% reduction in its CO2 emissions by 2030 and 70% by 2050. By improving fuel efficiencies and biofuel usage, Wagenborg claims to have reduced emissions by 26% so far.
