Wallenius Sol joins Gasum’s growing list of bio-LNG adopters under FuelEU pooling scheme
Swedish shipping company, Wallenius Sol, will begin running its dual-fuel vessels on bio-LNG under Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling scheme, aiming to generate surplus compliance credits.

Bio-LNG, or liquefied biomethane (LBM), consists of around 99.8% methane and can be used interchangeably with conventional LNG, or in blended form without any vessel modifications.
Wallenius Sol operates scheduled services connecting northern Finland and Sweden with Germany, the Benelux region, and the UK. However, it has not revealed how many ships will switch to bio-LNG.
The FuelEU Maritime regulation allows shipowners to pool compliance across multiple vessels. Within such pools, ships that exceed EU greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets can transfer their surplus compliance to those that fall short, helping participants balance emissions performance and avoid penalties.
Gasum, Finland’s state-owned energy company, generates compliance credits for pool members by supplying waste-based bio-LNG to selected dual-fuel vessels. The company relies on DNV’s digital tracking technology to verify fuel use and emissions, with DNV confirming the pool’s final balance annually before submission to EU authorities.
Wallenius Sol joins other operators already participating in the scheme. In recent months, Anthony Veder and Viking Line have also begun running ships on bio-LNG to produce surplus compliance, while Gasum’s LNG bunkering vessel Coralius now operates entirely on the renewable fuel.
