The biofuel blend was supplied to its vehicle carrier vessel, M/V Torrens, during its regular port visit in Masan. The B30 blend contained a 30% biofuel component derived from used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) and 70% HSFO.

The biofuel blend was supplied by South Korean energy firm GS Caltex. In September, the company also supplied a B30 blend to a container ship in Busan.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen is currently also assessing the “viability of both HSFO-Biofuel blends and VLSFO-Biofuel blends in the Asia region as part of its global deep-sea trade decarbonization strategy,” the company added.

“Despite the growing demand and supply of biofuels around the world, the preparation of biofuels in [South] Korean ports has been somewhat slow, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s energy sourcing manager Jang Hongseok said.

The shipping company expects that the collaboration with GS Caltex will ensure a steady supply of biofuel blends in South Korean ports.
