The four container ships are currently under construction at an undisclosed Asian shipyard, Wärtsilä says.
The delivery of the open-loop CCS-ready scrubber system is scheduled later this year, it adds.
“Wärtsilä is currently testing its CCS system at 70% [carbon] capture rate and a pilot installation will take place within the next twelve months”, says the Finnish engine maker.
It says the scrubber system has been designed with additional space and hardware to accommodate future retrofits of a full CCS unit on a vessel. It will also be possible to integrate a Particulate Matter filter – also known as a diesel particulate filter – with the scrubber.
“By investing in a CCS-Ready scrubber, ship owners will futureproof their assets and enable a smooth transition to CCS adoption once the technology is mature in the very near future,” Wärtsilä Exhaust Treatment Asia's director Scott Oh says.
