Methanol-ready indicates that the vessel will not be equipped to operate on methanol upon delivery but is designed for future retrofitting to enable methanol propulsion. This implies the vessel will initially rely on fossil-based marine fuels until the retrofit is undertaken.
Its propulsion package includes the engine, transmission, propeller and control systems.
In a ship engine, the transmission system transfers power from the engine to the propeller, adjusting speed and power for efficient propulsion.
The 38,000 DWT vessel, under construction at China’s Zhejiang Xinle Shipbuilding, is set to be launched in late 2026.
Once completed, it will be the world's largest vessel of its kind with a methanol-ready notation, according to Wärtsilä.
NovaAlgoma is a joint venture between Switzerland-based Nova Marine Group and Canada-based Algoma Central.
