After piloting a first hydrogen-fuelled crew transfer vessel earlier this year Windcat Workboats now wants to add six more by 2024.

The company claims its crew transfer vessel Hydrocat 48, which it introduced with CMB.TECH at the World Hydrogen Summit in May this year, is the first hydrogen-fuelled vessel first of its kind. It now wants to expand its hydrogen-fuelled fleet.

Other companies have been developing hydrogen-fuelled vessels as well. Norway's LMG Marin designed the MF Hydra, a ferry operated by Norled.

Although these small-scale hydrogen vessels are unlikely to make much of a difference in reducing global greeenhouse gas emissions, they can provide valuable technical and operational experiences for developers of bigger hydrogen-fuelled vessels.

Two of these crew transfer vessels will be delivered this year, two in 2023, and two by 2024. They will fill up on hydrogen from onshore trucks that can move between ports they call at, Wildcat says.
