WinGD to start field trial of new technology on CMA CGM vessel

Swiss engine manufacturer WinGD will start field trials of its new variable compression ratio (VCR) technology on a vessel operated by French shipping giant CMA CGM.

WinGD will try this new technology on a dual-fuel engine that can run on LNG and conventional marine fuels.

The VCR technology is a hydraulic solution positioned on a two-stroke engine’s piston crosshead. It can adapt to the cylinder compression ratio in dual-fuel engines, according to the fuel selected to operate the vessel.

It also allows the cylinder to adjust to ambient conditions and engine load while optimising combustion and reducing fuel consumption, the company claims. VCR also helps in minimising methane slip – a commonly faced issue with LNG-powered dual-fuel engines.

This technology was developed in June 2023 in collaboration with Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui E&S DU (MESDU, WinGD said. It “marks the first use of adjustable compression ratio – normally a fixed design parameter – in any marine engine,” the company added.

Onboard testing is expected to start following the vessel’s dry-docking period in September this year.

“The improved operational flexibility, fuel savings and methane slip reductions achieved by VCR technology will support ship owners and operators on their way to decarbonisation,” the engine maker added.
