Wintershall Dea to develop carbon dioxide hub in Wilhelmshaven

October 19, 2022

German gas company Wintershall Dea and liquid bulk terminal operator HES Wilhelmshaven Tank Terminal will jointly develop CO2nnectNow - a hub to store and transport captured carbon dioxide.

The project will use Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) process, through which carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes will be captured, and then transported from its place of origin to be stored deep underground in geological formations.

Captured carbon dioxide from German industrial sites will be transported to the hub in Wilhelmshaven. And then transported via pipeline to be stored permanently under geological formations in the Norwegian and Danish North Sea.

The company’s recent partnership with Norwegian oil company Equinor to build a 900-kilometre carbon dioxide pipeline connecting both the countries will aid the project. The pipeline will ensure safe transport of carbon dioxide from the German coast to the Norwegian North Sea.

Wilhelmshaven, which is Germany’s sole deep-water port, is an ideal location for the project due to its deep draft quay and well-connected rail infrastructure, Wintershall Dea says. The feasibility results of the project are expected by next year.

The hub will also support the company’s hydrogen production project at Wilhelmshaven, BlueHyNow, by capturing and storing carbon dioxide emitted by it.

Carbon capture technology has been gaining traction as several oil and shipping companies have ramped up their efforts to attain net zero emissions by 2050.

Earlier this month, Swedish tanker operator Stena Bulk teamed up with a consortium of shipping organisations and companies to test onboard carbon capture in a three-phase project spread over two years.

Rotterdam-based logistics company Samskip has also announced to install carbon capture and filtering systems on two of its biofuel-powered container ships by next year.
