Yang Ming has commissioned South Korea-based shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean to construct the 16,000-TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels.
The container ships will carry ammonia fuel-ready (AFR) class notation, granted by the US-based classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
‘Ammonia-ready’ means that while the septet will not be equipped to run on ammonia upon delivery, they can be retrofitted to use ammonia fuel in the future.
The seven vessels will feature IMO Type B LNG fuel tanks with a 1.0 bar design pressure, developed through a joint initiative between Hanwha Ocean and ABS.
IMO Type B LNG tanks include a partial secondary barrier to contain minor leakage, while the 1.0 bar design enables to retain higher vapour pressure.
The container vessels are more efficient “compared to the conventional 0.7 bar design”, Yang Ming claimed.
Notably, Yang Ming already has five 15,500-TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels scheduled for delivery in 2026.
