Zulu Associates’ zero-emission boxship design gets LR nod
The prototype of a small zero-emission and autonomous container ship has received approval in principle from the classification society Lloyd's Register (LR).

The short-sea vessel designed by Belgian naval architect Zulu Associates will be able to operate uncrewed in the English Channel and North Sea.
Zulu Associates says that the vessel will use zero-emission technology for propulsion in the future.
The 200-twenty-foot-equivalent (TEU) vessel will primarily run on batteries or alternative fuels like hydrogen, ammonia, or methanol through internal combustion engines or fuel cells.
Belgian marine engine manufacturer Anglo Belgian Shipping Company is working on its alternative propulsion and auxiliary power systems, such as wind and foils, to enable emission-free shipping.
In the current configuration, a generator powers the vessel's auxiliary systems.
Lloyd's Register's area manager for the UK & Ireland, Mike Holliday says the design has the potential to use "a number of alternative propulsion technologies" that will drive decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
