ABS greenlights Bumi Armada’s floating CCS design
Malaysia-based offshore services firm Bumi Armada’s floating carbon storage and injection concept has been approved in principle by classification society ABS.

ABS explained that the floating facility will temporarily store captured carbon dioxide (CO2) onboard at low or medium pressure, then transport and inject it into depleted oil and gas fields or storage aquifers to permanently store it offshore.
The approval covers both newbuilds and retrofit carriers, ABS said.
“Carbon capture and reinjection in depleted fields is a promising technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and it is likely that this process will become more widespread and play an increasingly important role in the transition to a low-carbon economy,” said ABS president and chief operating officer, John McDonald.
