The Port of Long Beach, one of the busiest ports in the US, issued a draft update of its master plan in January 2022. The draft proposes modifications that will allow LNG bunker facilities to be built in the port.
Some port authorities and shipping companies have been promoting LNG as fuel with lower carbon dioxide emissions that can help the shipping industry to decarbonise. However, environmental groups like Pacific Environment have been opposing plans to boost LNG bunkering by highlighting its high methane emissions and other global warming effects.
"The Port of Long Beach claims that LNG is crucial to reducing port pollution, but LNG will exacerbate our climate crisis by accelerating warming and worsening the impact of air pollution," Pacific Environment says.
