Rotor sails are a modernised version of the Flettner rotor, using the Magnus effect to generate lift from spinning cylinders. Under favourable wind conditions, this allows a vessel’s main engine to reduce power while maintaining speed, cutting fuel consumption.

The 208,000 DWT bulk carrier Berge Meru has been fitted with four 35-metre rotor sails. The installation was completed at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China in December 2025, and the vessel has since finished its first voyage to Singapore.

The project follows a similar installation of four 35-metre rotor sails on the bulk carrier Berge Neblina in June 2024.

Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) are gaining traction as shipowners look to improve efficiency and reduce fuel use.

This month, Spanish developer bound4blue installed four large suction sails on a vessel operated by Maersk Tankers. Chemical tanker operator Chemship has also placed an additional order for WAPS from Dutch wind-power company Econowind for two of its vessels.

Meanwhile, South Korean shipping firm HMM has deployed an oil and chemical tanker fitted with a wind-assisted propulsion system for sea trials.
