Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has issued the first Type Approval Certificate for a 100% hydrogen fuelled marine engine developed by BeHydro.

BeHydro is a joint venture between Belgian marine engineering firm CMB.TECH and engine manufacturer Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC Engines).

The engine was developed and tested at ABC Engine's facility in Ghent and is designed to run exclusively on hydrogen without the need for pilot fuels.

The certification confirms that the engine's design complies with LR’s requirements for safety, performance and reliability in marine applications.

"The issue of this Type Approval Certificate demonstrates that hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine technology is continuing to mature as a viable option for maritime applications," said Claudene Sharp-Patel, global technical director at LR.

The engine range delivers between 900 kW and 2,670 kW and is designed for a variety of marine applications.

According to LR, removing the requirement for pilot fuel simplifies the engine’s design and removes onboard carbon emissions at source.

The development follows an earlier approval granted by LR in 2023 to BeHydro’s hydrogen dual-fuel engine, which was the first Type Approval for a hydrogen dual-fuel engine.
