Denmark’s European Energy has partnered with Canadian ethanol producer Greenfield Global to develop a 48,000 mt/year e-methanol plant in Québec.

The facility will be located at Greenfield Global’s existing fuel ethanol distillery, where biogenic carbon-dioxide (CO2) will be captured from the fermentation process during ethanol production.

The captured CO2 will then be combined with green hydrogen produced using renewable electricity to produce up to 48,000 mt/year of e-methanol.

The companies are targeting shipping as one of the potential markets for the fuel, European Energy said. The Danish producer already supplies e-methanol to the shipping sector from its Kasso plant in Denmark, with A.P. Moller-Maersk among its key offtakers.

Québec was selected for its low-cost, low-carbon hydropower and supportive policies for low-carbon investments. Greenfield Global’s site also offers existing infrastructure and access to domestic and European markets, European Energy said.

“Together with Greenfield Global, we see an opportunity not only to develop a competitive e-methanol facility in Québec, but also to establish a strong platform for future growth across North America,” Knud Erik Andersen, chief executive of European Energy added.

The companies have not disclosed a project timeline but plan to begin commercial discussions with potential off-takers, once preliminary engineering studies are complete and construction of the grid connection is underway.
