Japanese marine engine maker Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has won an order for four 60-bore ammonia-capable main engines, one for each car carrier in a project that seven Japanese companies announced on 27 October.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) will take two ships each. A planned joint venture of the two shipping lines intends to supply them from the bunker vessel, mainly at Nagoya and Mikawa. Power generation company JERA, which will handle ammonia supply for the project, has agreed to buy around 70,000 mt/year of green ammonia from India’s AM Green over five years. The release does not say when J-ENG will deliver the engines.

Ammonia news kept coming in October. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore introduced technical guidelines for ammonia bunkering, Eastern Pacific Shipping took delivery of a very large ammonia carrier that can run on ammonia, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and CMB.TECH launched three ammonia-capable bulk carriers due from early 2027.
