China completes first green methanol bunkering at Yantian port

January 23, 2026

This marks Yantian Port’s entry into operational green methanol bunkering, following the deployment of a dual-fuel methanol bunkering vessel and a successful ship-to-ship fuel transfer.

On 21 January, at Yantian Port in Shenzhen, Da Qing 268 completed its first ship-to-ship delivery of green methanol, supplying 200 tonnes of the fuel to the 16,000-TEU dual-fuel container ship COSCO Shipping Carnation, state news agency Xinhua reported.

This marks the addition of Da Qing 268, China’s first dual-fuel methanol-powered bunkering vessel, to Hong Kong-based Wah Kwong Maritime Transport's managed fleet.

The 109.9-metre, 7,500-DWT vessel is capable of both operating on and delivering methanol fuel, becoming Wah Kwong’s fourth bunkering asset, joining LNG and earlier methanol support vessels in its portfolio.

CIMC Green Energy Low-Carbon Technology supplied the green methanol produced at its new facility in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, which began operations in December 2025.

The facility converts local agricultural and forestry waste into green methanol, Xinhua noted.

The COSCO Shipping Carnation features onboard storage for large volumes of methanol and engines designed to switch between methanol and conventional fuel, enabling emissions reductions on long ocean voyages.

Wah Kwong described the operation as a major leap in building the fuel-port-vessel ecosystem within the Greater Bay Area.
