Canadian shipping company Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) launched its biofuel pilot across the Great Lakes in 2019. The Great Lakes – Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario – form an inland shipping network spanning the US-Canada border.

“Since then, the program has expanded across the Great Lakes and into Europe, with continued initiatives underway in Australia to support adoption,” the company said.

The CSL Group operated 10 of its vessels on biofuel across the Great Lakes between May and October 2025, consuming around 16,000 mt of B100 during the period.

In Norway, the firm operated three vessels on biofuel in 2025. These vessels consumed around 1,500 mt of 6% biofuel (B6) and around 1,300 mt of 30% biofuel (B30) for its European operations.

CSL attributed higher biofuel uptake in Europe to the introduction of FuelEU Maritime and the ongoing requirements of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

On the other hand, the dry bulk operator said its biofuel adoption in Australia was “constrained by regulatory uncertainty and higher fuel costs,” but it identified funding opportunities in 2025 to support biofuel adoption in the region going ahead.
